Student Scholarship Opportunities

The Tempe Union High Schools Education Foundation encourages students to pursue higher education and collaborates with generous community members who provide scholarship opportunities to seniors. The Foundation also supports district initiatives such as FAFSA enrollment at each school by funding the Tempe Union High Schools Education Foundation FAFSA Scholarship.   

 

Seniors are encouraged to apply for these scholarships to attend institutions of higher learning including trade schools, community colleges, and/or universities.

 

The method of application and scholarship requirements is explained in each of the scholarship descriptions listed below.  If you have questions, please make an appointment with your high school scholarship counselor.

Zita M. Johnson Beat the Odds Scholarship

​Mrs. Zita M. Johnson advocated for and was passionate that all students be given equal opportunities to complete their educational goals.

 

The Scholarship Committee is looking for a student who has successfully faced the challenges of teen pregnancy (male or female), has a minimum grade point average of 2.0 or better and who is now moving on into higher education.

 

This is a $1,000 scholarship.

Justin Shumate Spirit of the Band Scholarship

This scholarship has been established in honor of Justin by his family and friends. Justin, a loving son and a great friend to many, was an outstanding member of the Marcos de Niza Padre Pride band program. His dedication and love for music continues to inspire and motivate others.

 

This scholarship will be awarded to a MDN band student attending a technical school, community college or university.  Students can contact their Scholarship Counselor at Marcos for additional information.

Glover Scholarship

The Glover Scholarship was established by Eileen Glover after the passing of her husband.  The student must plan to attend a community college or trade school and work toward an Associate's Degree or Certification.  This scholarship is designated for a senior who will be graduating from Tempe High School and is planning to pursue one of the careers below.

 

  • A Certificated Program in most occupations

  • Graphic Design/Photography

  • Culinary Arts

  • Marketing/Management

  • Medical/Health Occupations

  • Construction/Welding/WoodWorking

  • Automotive

  • Cosmetology

Sarah Wintz Memorial Scholarship

Sarah Wintz was a Senior in the Mountain Pointe High School Early Childhood Program when she tragically passed away in a car accident in 2003.  Sarah was an exceptional teacher in the program with a passion to pursue her degree in Early Childhood Education.

 

One $1,000 Scholarship will be awarded to a Mountain Pointe graduating senior who has participated in the Early Childhood Program at Mountain Pointe High School and is pursuing a major in Early Childhood Education.

Andy Walters Memorial Scholarship

The Andy Walters Memorial Ceramics Scholarship was created in 2007 to honor Andy, a former Marcos student who perished in a car accident. Andy was a remarkable individual who demonstrated tremendous character and optimism, always giving his best and maintaining a positive attitude.

 

The $500 scholarship is awarded annually to a student in the Ceramics program at Marcos de Niza who exhibits these characteristics and shows a high level of dedication to their craft.

 

Students can contact their Scholarship Counselor at Marcos de Niza for additional information.

Tempe Union High Schools Education Foundation FAFSA Scholarship

A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to one student at each of the six high schools who has submitted his/her FAFSA application and entered the random drawing that will occur in May.

 

This scholarship is for graduating seniors only; see your scholarship counselor for additional details.

Scott Nasser Memorial Scholarship

Scott Nasser was a long-time, dedicated science teacher at both Fees and Geneva Epps Mosley Middle School (formerly Gilliland Middle School).. He coached basketball, mentored the National Junior Honor Society, and cultivated and harvested the schools’ gardens, teaching students about new food and healthy eating. He had an enormous rock collection that he loved sharing with his classes and colleagues.

 

He believed in the power of community service to create character and modeled that behavior. He had a fondness for students with special needs, and spent much of his free time and his summers coaching in the city of

Chandler’s Special Olympics program. His family has created eight $1,000 scholarships to continue his legacy and to honor students who share his commitment of service to others.

SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to community service as well as be in good academic standing and involvement in extracurricular activities.

  2. Applicant must have attended Geneva Epps Mosley Middle School (formerly Gilliland Middle School).

  3. Your scholarship application is due by Monday, February 3, 2025.

  4. This is a one time scholarship of $1,000.
